Estimados Académicos y Académicas FEN,

Les extendemos la invitación al seminario que organiza el Departamento de Economía, en el que se presentará el trabajo titulado "The effects of restitution on land use and productivity: Evidence for Indigenous groups in Chile".

Expone: Felipe Jordán, Profesor asistente, PUC.

Abstract: In an effort to redress historical injustices and support indigenous self-determination, multiple countries have adopted policies that return land back to indigenous peoples. Such land restitution programs may also yield important conservation benefits. However, little is known about how indigenous communities change land use after land is restored to their stewardship. Here we study the land use impacts of a Chilean  restitution program that, between 1994 and 2023, returned more than 200,000 hectares of land to Mapuche communities. Using a staggered difference in differences research design, we find that land restitution led to more grasslands, a traditional Mapuche use of land, and fewer forest plantations, a use of land that has sparked conflict with the Mapuche. Consistent with the theory of common pool resource management, smaller communities made the most productive use of restituted lands. These results provide insights to guide the design of future land restitution programs.

El formato será presencial y el seminario se desarrollará en la Sala P-303.

Saludos cordiales,
