Estimados Académicos y Académicas FEN,
Les extendemos la invitación al seminario que organiza el Departamento de Economía, en el que se presentará el trabajo titulado "Violence at school".
Expone: Josefa Aguirre, Profesora asistente, PUC.
Abstract:This paper estimates the impact of violence perpetrated by students and school staff on victims, their peers, and teachers. Using unique administrative data from Chile that links reports of student mistreatment to educational records, we overcome previous data constraints that have limited evidence on this phenomenon. Through a matched difference-in-differences design with individual fixed effects, we find that experiencing violence leads to persistent negative effects: increased absenteeism, higher dropout rates, and greater grade retention, alongside decreased academic performance. These effects persist up to four years after the incident, with victims more likely to transfer to lower-quality schools. In the long term, victims are less likely to graduate from high school or enroll in selective university programs. We also document significant spillover effects: peers of victims show decreased attendance and academic performance, and increased grade repetition following violent incidents. However, we find no evidence that schools respond by adjusting class or teacher composition.
El formato será presencial y el seminario se desarrollará en la Sala P-303.
Saludos cordiales,
