Abstract: This paper provides evidence that exposure to immigrants does not worsen native students’ outcomes. If any, exposure to immigrants slightly improves native students’ performance in language and mathematics standardized tests applied in grades four, eight and ten. This positive effect seems to be driven by immigrants enrolling in low-performing schools in which typically they perform better than their peers. For identification, we combine rich administrative student records that include family links with the variation generated by the fast growth of immigrant shares in Chile, where the proportion of foreign-born students increased from less than 1% to almost 8% in fifteen years. To account for selection, we estimate specifications that control for family and school fixed effects. We finally complement these analyses with an instrumental variable approach, finding similar results.
Saludos cordiales,
Dirección de Investigación
