Abstract - The largest economies in South America had one of the most impressive rates of industrial catch up between the late nineteenth century and the early 1970s. This secular rapid process of industrialization is one of the most impressive features in the economic history of the Western World.  We take a long term view to examine the timing and patterns of industrialization in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Colombia for the period 1900-2010 describing the industrial convergence and divergence with the global leaders (ie: the United States, The United Kingdom and Germany).  We show that their process of convergence, timing and patterns of industrialization differ and relate, analyze and put to test these outcomes with four basic explanations of the industrialization in LATAM: (a) the “adverse”international shocks theory; (b) the export-led endogenous industrialization view; (c) the state-led or Import Substitution Industrialization approach and (d) the “ stagnationist” view
