Resumen - We extend the standard intergenerational mobility literature by modelling individual outcomes as a function of the history of parental income, as opposed to a single measure of parental income. Using data for more than 500,000 individuals in Norway, we present semi-parametric estimates of the eect of the timing of parental income on education (and other outcomes). We nd that, conditional on permanent income, education is maximized when income is balanced across adjacent periods, especially when we look at the early childhood and middle childhood years. In addition, there is an advantage to having income occur in late adolescence rather than in early childhood. We are able to explain these empirical ndings with a simple model of parental investments in children with more than one period of childhood, with imperfect credit markets, and where parents have imperfect information about future income shocks, about the production function of skill, and about the ability of the child.
