Abstract: In this paper, we study the relationship between SWFs and the accumulation of international reserves (II.RR). First, we empirically study whether the presence of SWFs alters the size of II.RR. Furthermore, we delve into whether the objectives of the SWF also play a role in determining the accumulation of reserves. Second, using a theoretical model, we document the relationship through which SWF savings affect the Central Bank's foreign exchange liquidity needs during times of financial stress.
